Summer Term 2024

Remembrance – The Victorians – Victorian Toys

Big Question:

Narrative: This term we will be looking at the Victorians, with a focus on Victorian toys. Throughout the unit, children will start by delving into the world of Victorian toys, learning about the simple, handmade items that entertained children over a century ago. They will engage in hands-on crafting activities, such as making paper dolls and thaumatropes, while developing their understanding of historical contexts and fine motor skills. This exploration fosters curiosity about the past, enhancing their historical awareness and creativity. Next, students will compare Victorian toys to their modern counterparts, using Venn diagrams and engaging in discussions about the role of technology in today’s toys. This process builds analytical and comparative skills, as they identify how toys have evolved and reflect on the benefits and drawbacks of technological advancements. They will develop communication and collaboration skills through group discussions and presentations, making connections between past and present. As the unit progresses, students will critically examine the impact of modern screen-based toys and increased screen time on their well-being. Through debates, guest speakers, and reflective writing, they will develop their oracy, persuasive writing and critical thinking skills. By tracking their own screen time and reflecting on their habits, they will become more self-aware, considering how screen time affects their health and relationships.
